UKRAINE’S DEFENSE MINISTRY CALLS RUSSIAN DOCUMENTARY `PROVOCATION`

Published by the Kyiv Post, Feb 04, 2009

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry has called a documentary entitled "Svoi-Chuzhoi," which was recently broadcast on Russian television, "a provocation" which attempts to discredit the Ukrainian armed forces.

"The documentary, which was made at a low professional level, does not contain any evidence of Ukrainian servicemen's participation in the Russian-Georgian conflict in August 2008," the Ukrainian Defense Ministry said in a statement released in Kyiv on Tuesday.

"Even the program maker stated that he had no real documented evidence of Ukrainian military personnel's involvement in this conflict," says the statement.

The Defense Ministry denied any involvement of Ukrainian servicemen in the Russian-Georgian conflict in August 2008.

In addition, the ministry said this documentary is not the first attempt to discredit Ukraine and its armed forces. In 2006, Russian television aired a film entitled Pod Grifom Sekrento (translated as "Classified Information"), which alleged that the CIA had deployed detention facilities for its prisoners in Ukraine's Kyiv region.
