UKRAINIAN SCULPTOR WINS SECOND PRIZE

Ottawa, Sunday, February 8. The team of official judges awarded second prize to the sculpture created by the Ukrainian ice-carver Myroslav Dedyshyn at the Crystal Garden International Ice-carving Completion held in Ottawa on February 6 – 8, 2009.

In a period of 28 hours using eight blocks of ice Mr. Dedyshyn made a composition named “Angel”.

Mr. Dedyshyn noted that Angel is a symbol of beauty, hope and kindness, Angel is a bridge that connects us with God. Ice is a very good material to feature an Angel as it gives the sculpture clarity and lightness.

The participants’ sculptures were judged according to the following criteria: first impression, technical skill and difficulty, design and composition, creativity and artistic impression. From the total possible 100 points Mr. Dedyshyn received 90.2.

Ambassador of Ukraine to Canada Ihor Ostash greeted Mr. Dedyshyn with his victory and wished that number 13 which was the number of the Ukrainian sculpture in Ottawa Ice-carving championship will always be lucky for the sculptor.

Until February 15, 2009 anyone can vote for the best sculpture choosing Rogers People's Choice Award by texting the sculpture number on a Rogers wireless to 4779 (standard text messaging fees apply).

It was for the first time that a Ukrainian sculptor took part in the ice-carving competition in Canada. Next year Mr. Dedyshyn plans to arrive to Canada again to participate at a number of ice-carving festivals and championships in Canada.
